Digital Filmmaking: ADVANCED PROJECTS

Art 4040 Digital Filmmaking: Advanced Projects (stacked w/4016) In this course, students create advanced digital film projects in narrative, experimental, animation, or documentary formats. Students develop an ambitious project over the semester, defining their own approach and focus. Produce a project pitch, including visual concept, production plans, and storyboards. Hone video production techniques and digital video editing skills. Emphasis on collaboration and creative process from pre-production through final craft of short digital film for contemporary audience. This course serves students in the film minor and others who are interested in a continuing hands-on experience with digital video tools.

Art4016 Digital Arts : Advanced Projects (stacked w/4040) A digital studio course for students interested in exploring advanced projects using current or emerging technologies. Students develop self-directed focus and creative project goals. Advanced Students hone a body of digital art work through research, experimentation, reflection and feedback. Students should be prepared to work independently, sharing progress regularly on blog and through class critique each week. 

 


ADVANCED PROJECTS ASSIGNMENTS:

Project 1: Shakespeare First Folio Collaboration / Low Concert EVENT on Saturday October 22 at Karpeles Museum
Opportunity to collaborate with other advanced projects students on remix video projections for special event at Karpeles Museum featuring the music of Alan Sparhawk and Low.


Project 2: Develop FOCUS for Independent Project
From the beginning of the semester, begin to develop a topic for your own final short film, animation or digital art series...(develop script, scout locations, do pre-production planning).This could be in any subject or approach,with the materials and techniques that best fit your work... You may work individually or select to work in teams. Share your Ideas on your BLOG. The FOCUS PROJECT PLAN will serve as contract for Independent Project.


Project 3: INDEPENDENT FOCUS PROJECT
Over the semester, Advanced Project students will develop/plan/shoot and edit a short film of their own choice OR create a series of digital artworks for possible senior exhibition. Select to work individually or in teams. Post progress update to your own Advanced Project blog each week, with links to Vimeoclips and location photos, shot lists and experiments.


Student Learning Outcomes
Students completing this course will be able to demonstrate knowledge of strategic ideation and conceptual development for self-directed digital art or digital video project. Students will be able to demonstrate skill and innovation using digital media tools and techniques. Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to analyze, interpret, and critique digital video and emerging media artworks.

Advanced Projects / Studio and Location:

Art 4016 / Art 4040 STACKED CLASS: Advanced Projects Digital Art and Filmmaking classes meet together and students work independently on most projects. Opportunities for collaboration will be discussed in class. Select classes and video shoot sessions will be held in the MMADlab chromakey video studio (Bohannon Hall ) or on location / off campus.

Advanced projects students have access to special use of Digital Arts classroom. Experienced students may be able to schedule working in the Motion and Media Across Disciplines MMADlab video studio, to shoot actors against Chromakey / green screen for special effects or animation. Some classtime may be spent online or shooting on location. Production shoots can be accommodated with flexible class schedule when planned in advance.

Attendance Policy:
Advanced Projects students should be self motivated and enthusiastic about their self-defined projects. Attend all Critiques with work ready for each scheduled date. Clear off campus work days in advance. Skipped classes will impact final grade.

REQUIRED : ADVANCED PROJECT BLOGS

Each student will be required create a weblog or wordpress site to share topics from research, screenings, and project reflections. Weekly discoveries will be shared with the class on your blog and during critques of your progress. This online resource will track your work each week AND be graded as your final portfolio.

RESEARCH / INSPIRATION:
Students should enhance their understanding of their focus area of Video Art, Filmmaking, Animation or emerging Digital Media by researching topics and artists in the contemporary field. Each week update your blog with at least 3 new examples, links, and a short (~150 word) entries about what you have found and how it relates to your creative work.

Evaluation on individual short films or digital mixed-media series, and on engaged participation in all class activities: film screenings, demos, presentations, editing tutorials, critiques, and keeping your own blog. Plan to post regular updates to your blog by deadline each week


Software / Lynda.com training:
Each student will track their time on software training tutorials over the semester. .(Expect to do at least 8 hours over the spring). UMD users will log in using their University Internet ID and password in order to access training videos available on lynda.umn.edu.

    My Mind's Eye: Duluth Artist Imaginings of Shakespeare's Plays In honor of Shakespeare's First Folio visit to Duluth, the DAI will feature a group exhibition featuring portraits of famous Shakespeare characters.
    Mon, October 3, 5pm – 7pm in Duluth Art Institute Corridor Gallery on view through October 26.

Thursdays will generally be a Critique day for showing work and inspiration / influences. Plan to have NEW WORK / Progress to share EVERY THURSDAY. See calendar for a few changes to this schedule.
