The UMD Music Theory/Aural Skills Tutoring Program was established to help students in need of extra outside-class assistance from upper-divisional peers (normally, but not restricted to Theory/Composition majors). To find out more about this program, contact the instructor of your theory/aural skills class. Here are the guidelines for this program:
Syllabus
Dr. Justin Rubin
Office: Bohannon 25A
Office Phone: 726-8218
E-mail: jrubin1@d.umn.edu
Texts:
See UMD Bookstore
Readings:
As assigned.
Assignments:
1. Theory: The assignments will consist of projects to be prepared by the student in response to in-class musical problems as instructed by the professor. Readings in the text will be required alongside these projects. Creative composition will be explored through selected assignments.
2. Computer Literacy: For some projects, it will be mandatory to prepare all work on appropriate music engraving software when assigned (music majors only).
3. Composition: Following exhaustive study of selected compositions by master composers, students will compose original short pieces modeling the style and theoretical techniques learned.
4. Music Literature (extra credit): Students will keep a listening journal in order to become more familiar with the style and concepts of the music we are studying in class.
Attendance:
It is mandatory for each student to attend every class. Failure to do so will result in a lowered grade. For an absence to be excused (see Excused Absence Policy in Policies/Procedures in the UMD Catalogue), the student must provide valid documentation to the professor. In an emergency, I can be contacted through e-mail, the music office, or my office telephone.
For each three unexcused absences, a 1/2 grade will be reduced from the final average. Lateness is also not acceptable. For each two times a student is late, it will count as one unexcused absence. If a student arrives more than 10 minutes late, it will be equivalent to an absence.
Office Hours:
I will be in my office for any questions concerning the class, assignments, etc., as posted on my door (subject to change without notice).
Course Goals:
1. A working knowledge of musical terminology, composers, and historical trends.
2. Creative ability in rudimentary compositional procedures.
3. Understanding of the application of analytical techniques.
Final Exam Date: 8-10 AM December 17
