Organ Syllabus
Class Sessions: Humanities 250 by appointment
Office Phone: 726-8218
E-mail: jrubin1@d.umn.edu

Goals:

To guide the student, through development of practicing, compositional, and improvisational techniques, towards advancing their abilities at the organ in preparation for their professional musical focus.

Practice Schedule:

All students will be assigned a daily practice schedule to be updated on a weekly basis by the instructor.   It is as well advised for the student to keep a personal schedule of fixed times during the semester which are to be reserved for practice.

Areas of study:

•  Literature : An examination of various periods and styles will be a part of each semester's workload.
•  Improvisation : This aspect of organ playing will be studied by all students regardless of proficiency.   It will enhance both your ability to perform with a more keen sense of interpretation and enable you to understand traditional compositional forms and materials.
•  Hymnody/Church Music : The regular working life of any organist will require a thorough knowledge of the historical and contemporary practices.

Grading :

The final grade will be based on the degree of progress exhibited by the student in both the fields of performance literature and technical proficiency.   The level of expectation will reflect upon the individual student's level.

Office Hours:

I will be in my office (Bohannon 25A) for any questions as posted on my door (subject to change without notice).

Instructor Responsibilities :

My aim is not to dictate to you but rather to help you focus and develop your skills better and suggest techniques that will enhance your ability to play.

Attendance:

It is mandatory for each student to attend every lesson.   Failure to do so will result in a lowered grade.   For an absence to be excused (see Excused Absence Policy in Policies/Procedures in the UMD Catalogue), the student must provide valid documentation to the professor.   In an emergency, I can be contacted through e-mail, the music office, or my office telephone.

Piano Syllabus
Class Sessions: Bohannon 25A by appointment

Goals:

To guide the student, through development of practicing, compositional, and improvisational techniques, towards advancing their abilities at the piano in preparation for their professional musical focus.

Practice Schedule:

Students are required to practice daily in preparation for their next lesson.   It is primarily on this basis that a grade can be assigned at the conclusion of the semester.

Grading :

The final grade will be based on the degree of progress exhibited by the student in the fields of performance literature, technical proficiency, & improvisation/composition.   At the conclusion of the semester, you may need to play for a jury to be refereed by the piano faculty who will suggest a final grade (I reserve the option of deviating from this suggested grade by no more than one full letter grade).   The level of expectation will reflect upon the individual student's level.

Scheduling:

All students are expected to show up promptly to their lessons at their appointed time. Should any student need to miss a lesson, they must contact Dr. Rubin by email the previous day.   Unexcused missed lessons will adversely affect the final grade.
