Contemporary and Accessible:
Trends in American Composition and the Reevaluation of Audience Appreciation and Appeal
Date: April 25, 2009
Place: Weber Music Hall on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth
Introduction: To celebrate the University of Minnesota Duluth Music Department's Tenth Annual New Music Festival, a conference is being held in accordance with this year's incoming guest artists and composer: Accessible Contemporary Music of Chicago and Michael Daugherty.
Call for Papers/Presenters: Proposals for papers to be presented at the conference should focus on contemporary American composers who have returned to tonality or traditional materials from an earlier non-tonal period in their output, American art music composers who have significantly connected with audiences, the music of Michael Daugherty and his generation, American ensembles dedicated to presenting 'accessible' new music to audiences, the aesthetic question of accessibility, or the new directions of contemporary American art music. Technologically enhanced presentations or presentations that include musical excerpts/performances are welcome.
Panel: All materials will be reviewed by Dr. Justin Rubin, Chair of Composition, and Dr. Jefferson Campbell, Musicology.
Proposals: All proposals should consist of a cover letter with contact information, the name of your institution and/or affiliation, title (or indication of current student status), and an abstract of 250-500 words of your paper/presentation.

jrubin1@d.umn.eduSelection: Papers/presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes in duration. Selected presenters will be responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and meals. A lunch will be provided for the presenters on the day of the conference. Presenters and participants will be provided complementary tickets to the New Music Festival concert on the evening of April 24 and the Wind Ensemble concert featuring the music of Michael Daugherty on April 26. All proposals are due by December 1, 2008.
Participation: Students, performers, and faculty from any institution are welcome to attend at no charge to the conference.
