UMD's Dry Campus Can Punish Even Those Who Choose Not to Drink...

As an incoming freshman, I expected the school policies to be quite lenient as far as "partying" goes. However, the university's regulations make the campus free of alcohol use and any other drugs. If a student is caught drinking, not only do they risk recieveing a minor, if underage, but they chance a school citation. This must be paid off through either a one hundred dollar fine or fifteen service hours for the first offense. With the second offense, there is a mandatory two hundred dollar fine and thirty hours of community service on school grounds. A third offense, if applicable, will remove you from the residence halls, and you will be forced to find a location off-campus to reside for the completion of the school year.

WARNING!!!

* Not only those who participate in substance abuse are liable for punishment. Anyone associated with a substance (in a room with open or non-open bottles or with the sale and ditribution of a substance) can also recieve an on-campus citation.

I warn those who believe college is a "party city" to be careful; do not take it too far, and do not think you will never get caught. Residence advisors and night advisors patrol the halls to enforce campus policies and regulate those who break the rules.

If you don't believe the strictness of substance control at UMD, click this link and see for yourself...
