Living On Campus Versus Living Off Campus

By Arthur Byron

I would suggest to next years incoming freshman Bulldogs to live on campus instead of off campus for at least their first year at UMD. A student who lives on campus has many distinct advantages over a student who lives off campus. First, a student on campus has all of the University resources such as the library, tutoring center, and professor office hours readily available if needed. Another good reason to live on campus is having the ability to meet all sorts of new people in the dorms or apartments. The final reason I have for wanting students to live on campus is that people who live on the campus tend to care more about their school than those who do not live on campus. Since these students are on campus all the time they treat its facilities with more respect becuase they live there and want to have a nice living space. I think a student who lives on campus for their first year at UMD will transition to the college lifestyle easier than somone who does not live on campus their freshman year of college. Below are pictures of Lake Superior Hall, Griggs Hall, and the Oakland Apartments, all are availabel housing for freshman. More can be found on the subject of living on campus at www.d.umn.edu/.
