We talked briefly on Friday, February 23rd, 2007 in class about the beach as place of philosophical intensity, and the following painting came to mind. Sandro Botticelli painted it in either 1485 or 1486, and it is called The Birth of Venus. It is true to the story in Greek mythology of how Venus came from the sea (her father was a god named Poseidon). Why might it be that the Greeks saw the goddess of beauty as someone who would emerge from the fearsome depths of the murderous ocean?
