Back to TopHealth Care Management Major (Pending Approval)

The rapidly changing health care industry is the nation's second largest employer and the demand for qualified managers in health care and health product organizations is increasing. The Health Care Management major focuses on the management, financing, and economics of the health services sector, preparing students for careers in health care management or policy, clinical medicine, pharmaceutical services, nursing, or dentistry.

In response to the high demand for skilled managers and policy makers, the Health Care Management major builds upon the established strength of the academic departments and existing courses in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics and provides, in addition, a series of courses that familiarize the student with unique aspects and issues of the health care industry. An interdisciplinary faculty based in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics, together with adjunct faculty from area health organizations, prepare students majoring in health care management to respond to the many critical problems now faced by hospitals, government agencies, group practices, pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, insurance and managed care organizations, and consulting firms. The health care management major also provides the fundamental education and experience necessary for students interested in obtaining a graduate degree in health administration.

Students will gain a solid foundation of knowledge regarding the health care industry along with practical skills to apply that knowledge. The health care management major integrates academic and professional development through collaborative research and consulting projects among students, faculty, and the health care community, an internship program, and presentations from professionals employed in the health care industry.

The health care management major includes study in the following: managed care, market structure, and health care delivery; health care management; economics of health care; health policy analysis; health care marketing; financial management of health institutions; legal aspects of health care; comparative health care systems; management and economic issues of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry; and health care entrepreneurship.

The Health Care Management major will be accepting students and offering courses in the fall of 2005. You can learn more about degree requirements and course descriptions for the health care management major by visiting the Labovitz School of Business and Economics online at www.d.umn.edu/sbe/ and the UMD Catalog online at www.d.umn.edu/catalogs/. "Access to Health Risk Behavior in the United States: A State-by-State Look at Teens and Adults details Americans' answers to questions about their health, all cross-tabulated by age, education, income, and sex—the demographic factors known to be related to health risk behavior.

Some of the many topics covered in the book's section on adults include weight, women's health, physical activity, seat belt use, health insurance coverage, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, flu shots, etc."

"A new addition to the American Consumers Series, and a more comprehensive replacement for the discontinued Best of Health, American Health: Demographics and Spending of Health Care Consumers focuses on health care consumers rather than industry statistics and reveals future market and policy needs.

Presenting more than twice as many tables as contained in the popular Health, United States, American Health's 14 chapters examine addictions, aging, alternative medicine, attitudes toward health care, births, deaths, disability, diseases and conditions, health care coverage and cost, health care visits, hospital care, mental health, sexual attitudes and behavior, weight and exercise—the whole gamut of our physical and mental well-being."

"Understanding who health care consumers are and how they are changing is vital to health insurance companies, hospitals, medical personnel, pharmaceutical companies, government policymakers, and many others.

Best of Health: Demographics of Health Care Consumers is the first guide to how changes in the demographics of health care consumers are influencing health care wants and needs.

Best of Health explores the intersection between important facets of the health care industry and the consumers of health care."

"Providing more than 80 different statistics, this work contains health-care data for each of the nation's more than 3,000 counties and 329 metropolitan areas. The data are alphabetically organized by state and county with a separate section for metropolitan areas. The range of data is extensive: teenage pregnancy rates; deaths by types of cancer; numbers of hospital beds, optometry offices, and nursing homes; and more. The data also include demographics and vital statistics; the oldest data are for 1995, and some figures are as recent as 1998. Most of the information was drawn from the U.S. Bureau of the Census and the National Center for Health Statistics. An especially useful feature are state reference maps outlining counties and metropolitan areas. A CD accompanying the book provides an electronic text version.

Compiled by an experienced health-care data analyst, this work, containing much material that has been either inaccessible or not previously published, provides for the first time extensive health-care profiles of every county and metropolitan area in the U.S. Its specialized nature and high cost might restrict its purchase to health science libraries or major research libraries."*
