BizMiner offers industry financial analysis benchmarks for over 5,000 lines of business and industry market trends on thousands more. Their market analysis reports are available at the national and local levels down to the zip code. Bizminer is a great resource to use when developing business plans, or for any sort of entrepreneurship initiatives where you need to measure peer performance in an industry. Types of reports:

Mintel Reports
Database containing over 600 consumer product and service marketing reports. Most are US and UK based. They are full of amazing detail and analysis. This is one of our better sources of consumer psychographic information. Note that first time users will have to create a free account. See also our New Strategist Publications collection.

American FactFinder
The U.S. Census Bureau's source for population, housing, economic, and geographic data drawn from the official census.

Annual Survey of Manufacturers (ASM)
The ASM provides sample estimates of statistics for all manufacturing establishments with one or more paid employee. The U.S. Census Bureau conducts the ASM in each of the 4 years between the economic census which is collected for years ending in 2 and 7. Among the statistics included in this survey are employment, payroll, value added by manufacture, cost of materials consumed, value of shipments, detailed capital expenditures, supplemental labor costs, fuels and electric energy used, and inventories by stage of fabrication.

County Business Patterns 1
County Business Patterns is an annual series that provides subnational economic data by industry. The series is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Businesses use the data for analyzing market potential, measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs, setting sales quotas, and developing budgets. Government agencies use the data for administration and planning.

County Business Patterns 2
This annual series includes a separate report for each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and a U.S. summary. The divisions of the economy covered are agricultural services, forestry, and fisheries; mining; contract construction; manufacturing; transportation and other public utilities; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; and services.

Industry Research Using the Economic Census REF HC 101.B594 2004

Industry, Trade, and the Economy: Data and Analysis
A collection of industry sector data compiled by Export.gov using statistics from the Annual Survey of Manufactures published by the Census Bureau. The data are presented according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), which replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)system in 1997.

Industry Economic Accounts Information Guide
The Current Industry Analysis Division and the Industry Benchmark Division at the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) prepare and publish a variety of economic statistics on industries. Specifically, they prepare the input-output accounts, the gross-domestic-product-by-industry accounts, and travel and tourism satellite accounts. As outlined below, the data are published in the Survey of Current Business (SCB) or other publications.

Local Area Personal Income
The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) prepares annual estimates of personal income for local areas (counties, metropolitan areas, and the Bureau’s BEA economic areas). Local area personal income is the only detailed, broadly inclusive economic time series for local areas that is available annually.

Regional Economic Accounts
Data gathered by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) detailing state and local personal income, gross state product, regional input-output modelling systems, BEA's Regional FACT sheets (BEARFACTS), and BEA Economic areas.
