Adoption
Definition: The formal legal process of incorporating an child into a new or modified family unit.
Problem: The concept of placing a child in a non-natal family faces cultural conflict within the perceived family unit and governmental regulation. In some areas adoption is viewed as an alternative means of reproduction while in others it would only occur in unique circumstances or when the orphan is a member of ones extended family.
Case Examples:
United States: Adoptions are common place including international adoption.
Russia: Very few Russian families will adopt for any reason. Children instead are placed internationally.
Middle East: Adoption goes against Islamic law but fostering children is encouraged.
