China & Sterilization

In China, many men and women are forced to be sterilized after their first child.

China's one child per family policy had a rocky start because it involved changing the values of the Chinese people. Prior to this it was seen as patriotic to have many children. This was a sign of prosperity and strength.

One of the results is that boy children were more highly prized and girl children were killed or aborted in a means to have a boy. Those children from this first generation are now coming of marriageable age. Women now may pick and choose between suitors because the male female ratio has been thrown dramatically out of balance. As a result middle and lower class men have a hard time finding spouses as upper class men are more willing to marry below their status.
