Russia & Abortion

Russia is 2nd in the world, behind Romania, as having the largest numbers of abortions in the world, approximately 200 abortions for every 100 births.

Abortion is legally permitted under the following instances: at a woman's request within the 12th week of pregnancy; within 22 weeks if the pregnancy is the result of rape, a parent is imprisoned, the death or disability of the husband, or the courts have removed parental rights from the woman.

In Russia, abortion is the main method of birth control for financial reasons. Abortions are provided by the government health funds if the woman is in physical, emotional, or economic danger. If a woman simply wants one an abortion costs $5 in rural areas and $50 in Moscow.

In contrast to the cost of abortion birth control costs $10/month and the average salary is only $54/month.

Sex education is allowed but not enforced in public schools leading to widespread ignorance on reproductive issues.
