Race and ethnic groups

Humans don't sort into 'races'. We only have ethnic groups.

Can be the basis for subcultures within a culture (multiculturalism) or within a nation (plurinationalism).

Ascribed vs. Achieved

Processes to know and understand:

enculturation- process of learning cultural behaviors of your parents' culture by being born into it or adopted into it as an infant.

acculturatoin- process of learning by contact with another but staying within one's own group.

transculturation- process of learning another group's cultural behaviors and leaving one's own group to join the other group.

assimilation- process of being incorporated into a group other than one's birth group-done with permission/approval of the new group.

prejudice- an attitude, an opinion against a person, a group, or an idea.

discrimination- an act or behavior based on perceived difference between persons or groups (can be in favor of in which case it is often called "privilege", or against, in which case it is often called "bias.")
