***A very brief explanation of your essay topic is due in writing in class only on April 4. No lates.

This essay will be based on either a topic (e.g., an art movement, style, art form. etc.) or artist and may be selected from our text. (You may also consider other artists and any details you find in the library and Internet usage is encouraged). I will call upon students randomly during various classes to mention (in a few sentences) why a particular topic interests you. ---For starters, you might try any search engine--- e.g., google, alltheweb, icab, etc--and enter your topic, subject, movement or a name.

Guidelines
The essay expected will cover personal points of view, based on your knowledge of what you have researched in the topic/subject, and these interpretations are written in a logical and narrative manner. A ***report ***which gives a chronological accounting, i.e., "was born on--went to school in __became the worlds greatest surrealist in __ and died a poor painter in England" will not be accepted. I'm not looking for a paper which just recounts facts.
Work from a draft or outline. Start writing the sections you know most about, or have the strongest feelings about, and then copy or cut and paste them like a puzzle.

Essay requirements include a cover page, five text pages, and a bibliographic page. Typed or word processed, double-spaced, with running or end notes that include cross referencing to art works and comments in the text (use any note system you are now familiar with). The bibliography must include (1) text references, (2) URLs and (3) UMD Library book or periodical references.

Thesis statement.
Use the first paragraph to declare the purpose of the paper. A thesis statement helps keep you from straying; it channels your arguments and findings/evidence toward your goal. Write your thesis only once in a complete sentence.
Introduction.
Don't repeat your thesis statement. To be effective, strive for reader interest, present the issues you think are involved, and an explanation of what you will cover. Possibly use an anecdote, a quote, raise a question, and/or combine fact or ironies.
Text body.
You could mention opposing points of view to define your own perspective. Consider who and how they did what, when? In looking at art, what interests you? Pay attention to the artist's contexts or sites (where was the work completed and where is the work likely to be seen)? Unusual materials and techniques (how is it done? Unique formal element useage (line, color, shape, etc.) , composition, proportion, scale, balance, rhythm, etc.), intent and content (images, symbols and icons, subject matter and their underlying meanings or themes)? Their unique place in history (in what period of time does the work reside; the social and political influences and the role of art and the artist within society?) And any title (what does the title suggest about the content of the work. what about untitled works? Could this be your cue to participate or, does the artist refuse to categorize the work?).
Conclusion.
This summarizes where readers were meant to go. Very briefly review info presented in the body. Importantly, you are writing about the major points which have lead up to your personal opinions, inferences, or even judgments.
Bibliography
Proof read letter by letter, word by word, phrase by phrase, punctuation by punctuation mark. (Check with the Access Center, 726.8217) Have a friend proofread your paper in exchange for reading the friend's. Use dictionary, check footnotes or running notes and bibliography on the 6th page.
Keep a copy of your Essay file on a Floppy, Zip, Jaz, Orb or whatever external storage device you have access to. Essays cannot be returned.

The writing is to be your own work, expressed in your own words and thoughts, created specifically for this class. In placing your signature on the cover page, you attest that this is your own work.
