Typography in Map Design

Lettering (typography) plays an important role in teh effective communication of a map's message. An effective map design incorporates lettering as a utilitarian and functional component, as well as an aesthetic map element. In this exercise, you will prepare a map of Brazil. It is your task to demonstrate your knowledge of the type placement guidelines discussed in class and described in the text.

Your map should include labels for all of the countries, cities and features listed below. Use a dot (small circle, same size) to represent each city. You should develop an ordinal ranking of the cities based on population-use three classes-and your font sizes (not circle sizes) should reflect these classes.

Also, you should create a map with proper balance and layout, as well as figure ground contrasts. You should create a map with proper balance and layout, as well as figure ground contrasts. You should include proper marginal information (i.e., title, scale, etc.) and produce your map in color.

You should also create a compilation worksheet and a short WORD file with a description of how you arrived at your class rankings for your cities.

A list of 44 cities with their respective populations, several water features, and the district names was provided and it was our task to incorporate these into our projects. Several technical challenges arose as well, such as the necessity to fit the district boundaries in using an imported layer that did not exactly line up with the base map we were given. Adobe Illustrator CS3 was used to create my map.
