Contiguous-area Cartogram
For this lab, you will produce a contiguous-area cartogram of the US showing 2004 gas consumption per 100,000 people. You are essentially mapping the same data as you mapped for lab #5. For this lab, though, instead of using pattern texture/gray shades to show which class a chorogram belongs, the area (i.e., size) of each state will be proportional to the gas consumption for that state. An added element to this assignment is that all areas that are contiguous in the real world must be (as much as possible) contiguous on your map. Lastly, characteristic shapes of states should be preserved as much as possible.
