Dane Smith is the president of Growth & Justice, a policy research center that focuses on economics and state-local tax and budget issues, advocating for smart public investments that improve both business growth and economic justice. Founded in 2002, Growth & Justice has become a key player in Minnesota on education, transportation, government accountability and tax-and-budget issues. In 2007, Dane concluded a 30-year career in journalism, reporting and writing on politics and government for the Minneapolis Star, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and the Star Tribune. He has covered local government in the northern Twin Cities suburbs, city and county government in St. Paul and Ramsey County, and was for three years the Pioneer Press’ national correspondent in Washington D.C. From 1986 to 2007 he was the lead state politics reporter for the Star Tribune at the state capitol. In 1993, he co-authored with colleague Dennis McGrath a book chronicling the late Sen. Paul Wellstone’s 1990 campaign. He has won several journalism awards and studied government finance for a year as a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University in 1989-90. Dane also has served as chairman of the Inver Hills Community College Alumni Board of Directors, and he has taught courses in politics and government as an adjunct faculty member at Inver Hills.
Dane is co-teaching a special topics course this semester on the Financial aspects of Advocacy Organizations with Perry McGowan and Fawn Bernhardt-Norvell.
