course description: This course studies poetry written in English during the modern period. It will focus on the emergence of modernism, the development a modern poetic idiom, movements within the modern period, and important figures of the period. We will study two modern epic poems.

requirements: Students are expected to attend class regularly, do all reading assignments on time, and be intellectually engaged in all classroom activities.   In-class assignments may be given without advanced notice. In addition, there will be midterm and final examinations, as scheduled on the course calendar, and two formal written assignments. Due dates for papers are indicated on the course calendar. Papers will be worth 50% of the final grade; tests (40%), in-class assignments and class participation (10%). Two short papers (5-7 pages) or one research paper (12 pages) will be required from undergraduates; one short paper and one long paper are required from graduates. Students who hand in long papers (due on December 7) should follow requirements of the research paper for the English Senior Portfolio and should meet with me to discuss your paper topic by mid October.
