Patricia Lauber

1924-

(2000 Kerlan Award)

The Kerlan Award is given "in recognition of singular attainments in the creation of children's literature and in appreciation for generous donation of unique resources to the Kerlan Collection for the study of children's literature." The books listed below are owned by the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Library.

A collie known as Clown because of his antics, who would not learn to do his duty and take care of the sheep properly, proves his worth during a flood.

Lauber, Patricia. (1959). Changing the face of North America; the challenge of the St. Lawrence Seaway. (Maps and diagrams by Wes and Gloria McKeown). New York : Coward-McCann. 386.2 L366c

The St. Lawrence Seaway creates a seacoast 8400 miles long and makes seaports out of inland cities. The huge international construction unfolds in vivid and precise detail.

The first black blizzard began on November 11, 1933 and the Southern Great Plains slowly turned into a Dust Bowl. The causes of the Dust Bowl are traced to men’s failure to understand the Great Plains and their semi-arid climate, but with the help of the Soil Conservation Service, new farming methods were developed that enabled farmers to successfully farm the Plains.

Tells the difference between ice, icebergs, and glaciers; describes the icebergs that form each spring off the Greenland icecap and are guided by the Atlantic Current; and discusses the Ice Age and what influence scientists think the polar cap will have on the climate in the future.

An account of how and why Mount St. Helens erupted in May 1980 and the destruction it caused, and a discussion of the return of life to that area.
