When Ann Jackman was fourteen and her brother Philip eleven, their father decided to become a fur trapper, so the whole family moved to northern Ontario, near a Hudson's Bay post, and built themselves a home.

The Brownes--Danforth a retired actor and his two children, 17 year old Royal and 14 year old Wally--own the houseboat Argosy. Their third summer peddling goods up the coast of British Columbia brings something good to them all. Most important for Royal is her meeting with Eric Ward who owns his own boat.
