Databases for Children and Young Adults


The following databases are available to UMD students, faculty and staff as well as users in the University of Minnesota Duluth library. Children and young adults can access some of these databases through the public library.
Discovering Collection	Use this comprehensive database to retrieve in-depth reference content for the core curriculum areas of geography& cultures; history; literature; person; multimedia; and science and health.
	Encyclopedia Britiannica Online	Full-text of the Encyclopedia Britannica, a general information source for all age groups. Paid for by Electronic Library of Minnesota.
Grolier Online	Online encyclopedias for K-12 students. This resource includes the following references: Encyclopedia Americana; Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia; The New Book of Knowledge; La Nueva enciclopedia Cumbre en linea; The New Book of Popular Science; Lands and People; and America The Beautiful.
	InfoTrac Junior Edition	Designed for junior high and middle school students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc. Paid for by Electronic Library of Minnesota.
InfoTrac Kids Edition	Designed for K-6 aged students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc. Paid for by Electronic Library of Minnesota.
	InfoTrac Student Edition	Designed for secondary school students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc. Paid for by Electronic Library of Minnesota.
Junior Reference Collection		Designed for students grades 6-8, this database has information from reference books about people, places, history, science and more. Includes photos and maps.
	MAS Ultra School Edition	Contains full text for more than 500 popular, high school magazines. Paid for by Electronic Library of Minnesota.
MasterFILE Premier		Contains full text for 2,053 periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues and more. Paid for by Electronic Library of Minnesota.
	Middle Search Plus	Provides full text for more than 140 popular, middle school magazines. Articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexilles).
Primary Search		Provides full text for more than 70 popular, magazines for elementrary school research. Articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexilles) and coverage is available 1990 - present.
	World Book	The World Book Online Reference Center provides access to the online encyclopedia as well as an atlas, dictionary and "Explore Minnesota" section. Entries can include encyclopedia articles; maps; tables; sounds; pictures; back in time; and special reports.
