Soldering Audio Cable


I. Purpose: To accurately solder XLR audio connectors for mike cables, sound speaker adapters, or DMX use.

II. Procedure:

1. Plug in soldering iron to preheat.

2. Locate cable, male and/or female connectors to be used.

3. Place connector in table vise.

4. Use the soldering iron to hold bare wire against correct pin to heat.

5. Feed solder wire into connection, saturating cable wire.

6. Remove solder iron while holding wire in place while it cools.

7. Repeat procedure for each wire as necessary.

8. Reassemble XLR connector insuring proper strain relief.

VI. Results:

1. Each completed connector must be tested using a continuity tester.

2. Once continuity is confirmed, return cable to plastic bag.

3. Label plastic bag with your name.

VIII. Project Demonstration:

1. Project is due Wednesday, February 27

4. Mic and speaker cables will be tested in the Dudley Theatre sound booth.

3. Projects that do not work may be submitted later for a lowered grade.

4. Missing projects will receive a grade of 0.
