History Hartley Field was originally purchased in 1890 by Gilford Hartley. Gilford Hartley cleared about 50 acres of land to establish what was then called the Allendale Farm. On this farm lettuce, celery, and potatoes were the main produce. These vegetables were stored in the root cellar seen to the right. The lettuce grown on this farm became in such high demand that it was shipped all the way to Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis. In 1913 Hartley Road was built. This road is still a popular artery that connects the Duluth neighborhoods of Woodland and Kenwood. Although the road is currently only used by hikers, skiers and bikers it still appears on most Duluth road maps. Another significant event that happened in 1913 was the formation of Hartley Pond. A dam was constructed on the Tischer creek to form this pond. This became a popular ice skating place for many years. In 1976 the dam was washed out and promptly rebuilt by the Army Corps of Engineers. A picture of this dam can be seen to the right. Hartley Pond is regularly stocked with trout. It has become a favorite fishing hole for many Duluth residents. The demise of the estate happened in 1931 when taxes were increased and the Hartley family was not able pay. Most of the buildings were removed and the land was repossessed by the state of Minnesota. In 1947, 19 acres of land was sold to private investors and homes were constructed in what is now the Woodland neighborhood.
