Nature Center

The Hartley Nature Center (HNC) is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1983. The Hartley Nature Center strives to provide opportunities to develop understanding and appreciation of the natural world. In 1989 the City of Duluth established a 20 year lease to build and operate a nature center within the 660 acre park. After many years of planning and fundraising the construction of the nature center began in 2002.

All of the materials that are being used to build the nature center are environmentally friendly. The wood that is being used to frame the nature center is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council verifying that the wood has come from well managed forests according to the principles of environmental and economic stability. Construction on the nature center is expected to be completed in may of 2003.

The Hartley Nature Center offers a variety of public and school environmental education programs available year round. To date, over 50 schools and over 45,00 students have participated in HNC classes all without a building. Once the building is completed, the students
experience at Hartley Field will be enhanced with multimedia exhibits.

To get to the nature center, head up Wodland Ave. past UMD, follow Woodland Ave. until you see the Hartley Nature Center sign on the left, turn there.
