| The purpose of the NSP Avalanche Course is to provide participants
with a general knowledge of and skills for avalanche awareness. Course covers
personal safety in avalanche terrain and working in avalanche rescue team.
Participants will identify terrain factors that contribute to avalanche
formation and problems encountered during avalanche burial. Trip planning,
route selection, and knowing the precautions to take when traveling in avalanche
terrain are skills that the participants will learn. Early registration is important,
as books and pre-course homework are mailed to each student about 2 weeks ahead of time. At the 2008 Fall Meeting, both classroom and field sessions will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21. |
|
| Instructor Development Presenter: Bob Iverson, Viking Nordic Patrol |
Course Fee: $ 10.00 |
| This seven hour (plus) course is required to become an
instructor in any of the NSP Program Disciplines--OEC, MTR,
Avalanche, Transportation, and Instructor Development.
The course gives a starting point for someone to enter
into the Mentorship Program in their chosen discipline or
disciplines. The course covers such things as instructor
responsibility, how adults learn, human relations in teaching,
classroom management, learning levels, instructional resources,
instructional methods, evaluation and lesson planning. The course
provides a sound basis for an instructor to get started in the
instruction business and to move into the mentoring phase of becoming
an instructor. It counts as one senior elective. There is a course fee of $10.00 and
participants must obtain the textbook “Instructor Development--
Training the Adult Learner” from the online catalog at nsp.org. The
text is item # 502 and the cost is $19.50 plus postage.
The course will be run in two parts from 1:00 to 4:30
p.m. on Saturday the 20th and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday
the 21st. Six participants are required

| Mountain Travel and Rescue - Fundamentals Presenter: Daryl Coons, Buck Hill Patrol |
Course Fee: $ 25.00 |
| The primary goal of the NSP MTR-F course is to equip
patrollers with the knowledge that will enable them to cope successfully
with winter emergencies and to take care of themselves and others in adverse
winter conditions. The secondary goal is to provide the patroller with skills
necessary to function as an effective support member in a winter search
and rescue team. The field session will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21. You will need to bring a pack, compass, plastic tarp, something to cook, cook in, cook with (stove), something to carry water in, and anything else you may wish to carry, or equipment you may wish to share. NSP publishes an excellent MTR text: Mountain Travel and Rescue, NSP Catalog Item #509, $19.50. (The text is optional for the course held at the Fall Mtg.) |
|
| OEC Instructor Re-certification Presenters: Kathy Glynn and friends |
Course Fee: none |
| To maintain active status, an instructor must teach content
designated by the specific discipline, refreshers, or continuing education.
In addition, an instructor must participate in a division or national training
program (clinic, seminar, conference) once every three years. Sessions review
teaching techniques and updates students with the latest tools in OEC instruction.
Please bring your OEC teaching activity log. Did you know that NSP has a nifty
on-line entry screen where you can type in and keep track of your teaching activity
for any discipline? Click
here to go to the NSP Member Services log-in screen. Look for the "Instructor Activity
Log" link in the "Education Tools" section.
