The Western Region Meeting or your lawn?

Each summer when the Western Region Meeting is announced, we all have our reasons not to attend: The meetings are boring. I won’t know anybody. I’m not important enough to contribute. My lawn really needs fertilizing.

Well, snap out of it! This year’s meeting will take place September 25th-27th at Afton Alps in Hastings, MN. And it is all about you! This is your opportunity to brush up on some skills, learn something new, take a re-certification course, meet new friends, and reconnect with some existing pals, all before the madness of the ski season begins. A few interesting guest speakers will include Dr. Andrea Saterbak from St. Croix Orthopedic and the US Olympic Team, and Meteorologist Dave Dahl from KSTP TV. Class sessions will be held throughout the morning and afternoon on Saturday. You can sign up for classes such as CPR Re-certification, Instructor Development, Balance Training, Mountain and Travel Rescue, Awards Writing, Risk Management, Beginning Yoga, and Patrol Etiquette. Other fun classes are in the works. You can take as many or as few classes as you’d like. The mood is casual, relaxed and fun.

The social hour, reception and equipment fair take place in Afton’s main chalet from 5:30 to 6:30. You can relax with your favorite cocktail, chat with fellow patrollers, and browse the selection of great ski gear for sale. The banquet and awards presentation are from 6:30- 9:30. Maybe you or your patrol will win an award!

Not sure of what to do during your spare time? Afton Alps offers an 18-hole golf course, a 4-hole “par 3”, and a challenging mountain bike course. The ski area is surrounded on three sides by Afton State Park, which offers miles of beautiful hiking trails in the woods, on the bluffs, and along the scenic St Croix River. The quaint town of Afton is a couple of miles from the ski area, and is a great place to shop, eat, and people watch. Road bikers love to ride all along the St Croix Valley.

So take the time to spend with other great patrollers, learning some new skills, and having some fun. Your presence is the greatest contribution of all. Your lawn can wait one more weekend.
