Administration
NSP Office
Upgrades
Several exciting
upgrades to the NSP national office have been completed in the
past month. We've transferred to a new phone provider,
C-beyond, which should save the organization a substantial
amount of money. Recorded menu options now provide direct access
to each NSP department. Also, new and improved network
hardware has been installed, and the front lobby has received a
complete re-model, including new paint and a hardwood floor. National
Award plaques have been moved from the back of house to
the lobby area. If you're ever in the Denver area, stop
by and visit us.
Search Underway
for National ID Program Director
The search is
underway for a new leader for the NSP National Instructor Development
(ID) program. The NSP Education Department has received many
applications and is working with the Board to interview qualified
applicants. We anticipate a decision soon.

National Education Program Directors at PEC '09
An exciting addition to PEC '09 is the attendance of
many of the national education program directors and advisors,
including National Awards Coordinator Myer Avedovech as well
as OEC 5th edition editor Dr. David Johe and Program Director Ed
McNamara, who will be conducting a 5th edition Q&A
session. PEC attendees will have the opportunity to exhange
ideas with program directors, so be sure to attend the
conference if you'd like to meet and greet the directors and
share your thoughts.
The Patroller Challenge at PEC to Benefit Special Olympics
The first annual Patroller Challenge at PEC is a work
in progress, and the NSP has decided to use it to give back
by making the event a fundraiser for the Special
Olympics. For each team that participates in the Challenge, the NSP has pledged
to donate $100 to the Special Olympics. We're also searching for
corporate sponsors that are interested in matching NSP's donation. Up
to 15 three-person teams can participate, and interested teams or
singles can register in advance OR sign up at PEC. The on-slope
Challenge pits team against team in a medical assessment and
transportation scenario. In addition to benefiting the SO, winners will
take home skis, gear and other great prizes! The more teams that
register, the more money that will be donated! For info or to register
contact Chris Bourne at NSP.
January PEC spotlight: Two not-to-be missed events:
Dr. Torry is the director of research in the Biomechanics
Research Laboratory of the world-renowned Steadman Hawkins Sports
Medicine Foundation in Vail. His session at PEC will include
analysis and effects of sports injury as well as a discussion on
the aging body and ways to improving stamina.
Mountain Guard's On-Mountain Safety and Risk Management
Tour
Guaranteed to improve your knowledge of safety/risk
management issues and trends, this three-hour tour and workshop will be
led by Jimmy Lawrence, vice president of risk management for
Mountain Guard and a former patrol director at
California's Heavenly Mountain Resort. Joining Lawrence will
be an impressive team of claims and liability experts including ski
defense attorney Adam Strachan of Park City, Utah. Mountain Guard
is the leading liability insurance carrier in the ski industry
today.

National Day at Ski Cooper is February 28
Ski in the tracks of the 10th Mountain Division! Join
the Ski Cooper Ski Patrol for National Day on Sunday, Feb.
28. This annual event in Leadville, Colo., celebrates ski
patrolling and the bond between the NSP and the 10th Mountain
Division. In 1943, through the efforts of NSP founder Minnie Dole, the
10th Mountain Division was activated and headquartered at Camp Hale, a
stone's throw from Ski Cooper. The Ski Cooper Patrol proudly works this
historic terrain each winter weekend. National Day is a fun
event that will include ski and toboggan races, a pig roast,
camaraderie, après ski and more. Register at www.skicoopernationalday.com or e-mail
questions to Sarah Clark at sarah.clark@skicooper.org.

Committee Updates
Planning Committee
Earlier this
month, the NSP Planning Committee distributed a survey to all NSP
Alumni members. Thanks to the 34 percent of recipients that completed
the survey--the results will help inform the Board's decision
regarding Alumni programming and the possibility of a
national Alumni program.
A survey of female
NSP members was also distributed in January and will remain open until
Feb. 2. The NSP Women's Program Task Force and the Planning
Committee created the survey to examine and assess the needs
of female patrollers and help determine the direction of
a national women's program. If you did not receive the link to the
survey via e-mail, contact Kristen Bergeron by Feb.
2.
Finance
Committee
The Finance Committee is working closely with NSP
Executive Director Tim White and NSP Finance Director Wayne
Block to put together a draft of the NSP's 2009/10
budget. Information request forms have been sent to all national
program advisors, Board committee chairs and staff, and will be
returned and reviewed throughout February and March. This year
advisors, committee chairs and staff will be asked to provide
budget numbers for the next two years instead of one, as has been done
in the past. The final draft budget will be presented to the Board
for approval at the NSP Annual Meeting in June.
Fundraising
Committee
The Anniversary Fundraising Campaign
More than $60,000 has been pledged to the NSP's
Anniversary Campaign, with more than $25,000 collected and in the
bank. The campaign, which has the goal to raise $1
million by 2013, is still going strong! Pledge cards are
available at nsp.org or on page 36 of the fall issue of Ski Patrol Magazine.
Limited Lifetime Membership Drive
The NSP is holding a Limited Lifetime Membership Drive and
offering 200 Lifetime Memberships at a discounted rate of
$550. This special rate is only available for six more
months, ending June 30. Take advantage of this special offer at www.nsp.org.

Meet
one of the National Office Staff
Connor Scharfe
cscharfe@nsp.org
303-988-1111 ext. 2626
Connor works in order fulfillment and helps with other
member services. He joined the NSP in November after moving to
Denver from Lake Placid, N.Y.
Hometown: Connor has dual citizenship in the United States and
Canada--he considers both Lake Placid and Toronto his
hometowns.
Why He Loves Colorado: He can ski and golf in the same
day!
Fun Facts: Connor has played ice hockey his entire life. He
once beat New York State ski champion Juliana Saehrig in a "no
holds barred" race down the hill.
Snow Skills: On his days off
you'll probably find Connor skiing at Breckenridge. He's a great
alpine skiier and also a decent snowboarder. If he's not at
the resort, he's likely cross-country skiing in the
backcountry.

Visitors of the Month
In January, a
group of wonderful guests bearing gifts visited the national
office from the Central Division. Among them were Jim Woodrum
(division director), Brian Cobble (asst. division director), Chuck
Martschinke (Midwest Ski Areas Association) and Karen Woodrum, Jim's
wife. The group, who were in the middle of a
Western ski vacation, provided lunch to the NSP staff
and gave embroidered fleeces to each staff member as a token of
their appreciation. Thanks to the Central Division leaders
for their thoughtfulness and for stopping by--national
was glad to host!
