Meeting in Review

 

The NSP Board meets via teleconference at 5 p.m. Mountain Time on the third Wednesday of each month. All members are invited to listen in on the calls. Please contact Kristen Bergeron to request the call codes.  

 

The last meeting took place on Feb. 18. In that meeting the Board reviewed and discussed the national office written updates and voted on the following Action Items:

  • Approved the proposed committee appointments as set by National Chairman Terry LaLiberte: Planning Committee Chair, David Ginley; Finance Committee Chair, Bela Musits; Governance Committee Chair, Clark Noble; Education Committee Chair, Larry Bost;
  • Approved the appointment of Bela Musits as assistant national chair;
  • Approved the 2009 Board of Directors meeting schedule (meeting dates can be found under Member News/ Board News);
  • Tabled RFBA 02-09: OEC Retesting, until the next BOD meeting so that it can be reviewed by the Education Committee.

New Mountain Host Logo DebutsMountain Host Logo
A brand new NSP Mountain Host logo design is available to all host members. Patches with the logo, shown here, will be available this fall via the 2009/10 NSP Winter Catalog and from the on-line catalog as soon as they're in stock. With more than 500 hosts and a dozen participating resorts, the program is continuing to grow. A recent alumni member survey showed that more than 50 percent of respondents indicated an interest in becoming a mountain host. Aflac Insurance Available to NSP Members

  1. Snowbird's exclusive Cliff Spa is offering a special rate to NSP members during the conference. On April 15, 16 and 17, entrance to the spa and pool is only $10/day. 
  2. On April 15, NSP members have the opportunity to take a half-day lesson with one of Snowbird's excellent ski instructors at a discounted rate. A half-day lesson runs from 9:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and the discounted rate is $70. Please book through Snowbird Ski School at 1-801-933-2171.
  3. Snowbird is offering a half-day telemark ski lesson on both April 16 and April 17 for $80/day. A minimum of five people must sign up. Please contact NSP to register.
  4. Slots are starting to fill up for the Patroller Challenge at PEC. If you're putting a team together, please call or e-mail Chris Bourne at 720-963-2621 or cbourne@nsp.org to get a registration form.
  5. Room reservations for Snowbird's Cliff Lodge must be made by March 16 to receive the special $99 rate that's being offered during the conference. Call 1-800-453-3000 to make reservations; make sure to ask for the special NSP rate.
  6. Don't forget to book your airport shuttle to and from the Cliff Lodge. Call Canyon Transportation at 1-800-255-1841 and ask for the NSP rate.

February PEC Spotlight: Michael BerryMichael Berry, NSAA President

National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) President Michael Berry will be a featured speaker at the Patroller Education Conference. Berry has served as president of the ski industry trade group since January 1993 and has worked in the mountain resort industry for more than 30 years. In his presentation, Berry will provide a behind-the-scenes analysis of the 2008/09 ski season, highlighting operational information that's of interest to both ski area managers and patrollers. He'll also discuss important issues surrounding in the NSP/ NSAA joint statement of understanding and how ski areas and patrollers can work to improve safety, patient care and the art of rescue in the coming years.

 

 NSP Committee Updates

 

OEC Refresher Committee Meeting                             

The OEC Refresher Committee met Jan. 30-31 in Denver. Committee members in attendance included Greg Bala (committee chair), Nancy Pitstick, Brigitte Schran, Jennifer Bryan, Robert Morris, Thomas Rabaglia, Cathy Setzer, Denis Meade (NSP education director), and Carol Hudson (education assistant). The committee was in town to work on developing materials for the 2009 OEC Refresher Study Guide and Instructor's Guide. 

 

                                    Planning Committee

A Quality Assurance Task Force has been created, which will be headed by Chuck Herbert and co-chaired by Board members Larry Bost and David Ginley. The purpose of the task force is to ensure a high level of consistency and professionalism in the development and delivery of all NSP education programs. The group plans to work on a preliminary quality assurance plan for the delivery of NSP programs throughout the organization and will have a draft preliminary plan ready by the NSP's April 15 Board Meeting held in conjunction with PEC '09.
