2006 NSP Mountain Travel and Rescue Fundamentals

Patrollers lash together a rescue toboggan frame
Skis, poles and sticks can be lashed together to form the frame for a rescue toboggan. A ground-mat will be laid over the frame, and a tarp will enclose the assembly; forming a cocoon to enclose and secure the patient. This may not be a Cascade Toboggan, but it will get the job done!

Spirit Mountain, Duluth -  The 2006 MTR-F Course.

On Sept 23/24, 2006 in conjunction with the Western Region Fall Meeting, a Mountain Travel and Rescue Fundamentals course was taught by Daryl Coons, Western Region Mountain Travel & Rescue Supervisor, and Robert Kowalski.  The two-day MTR-F course is an introduction to skills that are useful to anyone who spends time in the outdoors at any time of the year.  During the classroom session, participants learn basic survival skills, including map and compass work, nutrition, meal preparation, shelter building, search and rescue strategies, and see lots of Daryl's cool wilderness survival gadgets.

During the field session, participants practice the skills discussed in class, and build teamwork skills necessary to solve projects as a team, and have a lot of fun.

Patrollers pose for a group photo
The original x-c ski trail-head warming and rental office at Spirit Mtn. (circa 1974, and now abandoned) provided a rustic backdrop for the group photo.
