Spirit Mtn. NSP OEC Refresher

Patrollers practice airway management and O2 administration
Instructor Kim looks on as patrollers Dave B. and Jean switch connections from a non-rebreather mask to the bag-valve mask, while Sue and Dave N. reposition the patient's airway and check for a pulse, after Travis, the "reader", informs them that the patient has stopped breathing. This oxygen station scenario builds problem solving and team-work. (Note the infant manikin head in the foreground; used to practice airway management protocols with pt's up to eight years of age.)

Patrollers extricate a patient from a ravine
Instructor Dan (orange sweatshirt) offers advice, as patrollers prepare the patient for extrication from a ravine.

Duluth -  Spirit Mtn. Ski Patrol conducted its annual Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC)  refresher on October 14, 2006.  As Bob Hart stated in his NewsLine feature for the Afton Patrol, an OEC refresher has two objectives:   First, it meets NSPS national requirements covering about a third of the OEC curricula each ski season.   Secondly, it allows each ski patrol to (a) review local policies and procedures, such as protocols for evacuating patients, and (b) provides patrollers opportunity to practice with newly acquired medical devices used by their patrol.

Many felt that this year's OEC refresher was one of the "best ever!"
