The future: Restoring and protecting ecosystem integrity

The project funded through The Great Lakes National Program Office of the Environmental Protection Agency to remove sawmill waste is complete. Several projects and efforts summarized on the Catalyzing Change page are ongoing or have yet to be initiated.

Projects to protect and Restore Grassy Point in the future will likely focus on one or more of the following areas:

Stresses include sawmill waste, illegal dumping of garbage, and exotic species. Based on the findings from ongoing monitoring efforts, additional wood waste removal projects may be proposed. Other area cleanup efforts are needed to address the garbage problem.

Wetland area has been lost to filling for development and road building. There is potential for more projects that would remove fill and convert upland areas back into wetland habitat.

Because access to the site has been difficult, there has been little or no sense of public ownership of the site. Developing a sense of stewardship for the site by improving access and increasing appropriate uses while discouraging inappropriate uses will be essential to the long-term protection of the area.
