Lake Superior Habitat Coordination

The Lake Superior Habitat Coordinaton project is part of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. An annual report of project activities for the project is available and describes the project direction and activities for the 1996 federal fiscal year.

Program activities focus on two main areas.

One is habitat protection and restoration efforts in the Lake Superior Watershed. These are on-the-ground projects to improve the integrity of the Lake Superior Ecosystem.

The other is interagency coordination and ecosystem-based management In the Lake Superior watershed. This involves working with governmental and non-governmental groups to work toward better management decisions for Lake Superior. The Lake Superior Binational Program, or LSBP and the Habitat Committee of the LSBP are examples of interagency cooperation to do this.

The framework of organiztions, rules, agreements and projects related to Lake Superior issues is complex. Many of the programs and organizations dealing with Lake Superior have Great Lakes or Lake Superior Web Pages. These are great places to look for information about Lake Superior.

The State of Minnesota has recently started building a presence on the web called North Star. Look there for lots of good information about Minnesota. These pages of mine are not yet an official part part of the NorthStar system. They are, therefore, subject to the standard disclaimers.
