Tim Holst

Dr. Tim Holst

Dr. Tim Holst is the Administrative Director of the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium, and the Associate Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at UMD. Tim is a geologist with a specialty in structural geology and tectonics. He also has long been interested in astronomy, planetary geology, stellar evolution and the early history of the solar system. He has been involved in teaching astronomy at the college level since 1970.

Howard Mooers

Dr. Howard Mooers

Dr. Howard Mooers is Director of the Planetarium and Professor and Head of the Department of Geological Sciences. Howard teaches Introduction to Astronomy as well as numerous courses in geology. An avid amateur astronomer since his youth, Howard spends evenings with his 8-year-old daughter in his private observatory.

Derric Johnson

Derric Johnson (UMD and State of Minnesota Student Employee of the Year, 2007)

Derric received a BS degree in physics in 2007 and if finishing certification as a high school math and physics teacher. He has conducted research in pure and applied physics and has always been interested in astronomy. He is accomplished on several stringed instruments includin guitar and bass. Derric serves as the "utility outfielder" for the planetarium. He maintains the equipment and presents shows on topics that range from the Sun to distant galaxies.

 

Josh Carlson

Joshua Carlson

Josh is a sophomore majoring in Chemistry, at least at the moment. He brings many years of experience in astronomy to the Planetarium staff; aAstronomy has long been his passion.  In his spare time, Josh enjoys  watching baseball and riding his bike.

Kelsey Hoover

Kelsey Hoover

Kelsey is a freshman at UMD and is studying Psychology. However, she has a wide range of interests in astronomy, astrology, nature, spirituality, religion, alternative medicine, culture, travel, Spanish, world music, snowboarding, and dance. Kelsey is also a champion of humanitarian projects and causes.

Brian Walstrom

Brian Walstrom

Brian Walstrom is currently a freshman at UMD. With a tentative major 
in physics Brian has an active interest in astronomy, particularly in 
cosmology. Aside from the stellar business of the planetarium and 
classes, Brian's other major activity is in the UMD alpine ski team.
