- What was the "flight of the earls" and what was its effect?
- How was the plantation of Ulster in the early 17th century different from
earlier plantations?
- Who were the "old English?" What did they have in common with
the ruling English? With the Irish?
- Briefly describe the rebellion of 1641: Who was involved? What happened?
What was the outcome?
- How did Oliver Cromwell change the landowning aristocracy? What was the
result?
- What was the Act of Settlement? Who profited?
- List the differences between James II and William of Orange. What led up
to the Battle of the Boyne? What was the result for the Irish? What was the
Treaty of Limerick?
- Construct a timeline of Irish history from the arrival of the Celts to the
Treaty of Limerick. Pick a couple of the key events from each chapter so far.
For instance, in this unit you might include (among other events) the flight
of the earls and the battle of the Boyne.
- Consider the three poems you read, two by Aodhaghán Ó Rathaille
and one by Daibhí Ó Bruadair. Ó Rathaille's are serious
and Ó Bruadair's is humorous. What, in either the content or the tone
of each poem, would be a reference to 17th century Ireland?
- Reminder: Next week you have a project deadline, and will
need to meet briefly with the instructor. You'll turn in next week's assignment
at that time as well. Be prepared to speak your phrases of Irish, and to point
out important places discussed so far on a map of Ireland.
If you're looking for a bit of extra credit, compose a poem or a piece of
prose in thestyle of Ó Rathaille or Daibhí Ó Bruadair.
It can be about one of the events of this unit, or about one aspect of life
as an Irish person at this time (as it might have been).
