Course Description: Psy 1003, General Psychology,
4 credits, is an introduction to the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes.
Content includes a consideration of the major topics investigated
by psychologists, with an emphasis on basic principles, concepts,
and procedures used in the field.
In England, this course will explore the concepts in the field of psychology via the following:
1.
The application of Psychology through Service Learning: Each student will be expected to volunteer in the community of Birmingham as a service learning project for no more than 2-3 hours per week. The experiences of this work will be the focus for discussion and understanding of human behavior and mental processes through reflective journal assignments and class discussion.
2.
The scientific approach to psychology through Research Papers: Students will work in groups to design, conduct, analyze and report basic research concepts utilized in the field of psychology.
3. Critical thinking: A model of critical thinking will be utilized throughout the course using a variety of textbooks as one vehicle for critical thought. Students will each be given a different general psychology textbook to use for the course. An emphasis on comparison and critical thinking around text and course content will be stressed.
4. Intercultural effectiveness: Concepts of intercultural effectiveness will be stressed throughout the course and related to course content using the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity. Using the concept of worldview, we will explore how behavior and mental processes are reflected in, and impacted by, culture.
5. WebCT assessment
NOTE: Individuals who have any type of disability which
will require special circumstances in and/or outside of class,

effects. Educational excellence depends on the creation and maintenance
of environments in which all members of the academic community
can thrive, working up to their full potential" (Minnesota'
