*Four options of outside experience (OE) are required by department policy. You may also complete two additional OE's for extra credit. Each OE option is worth up to 5 points. You may repeat the same option more than once. To get extra credit you must complete the option AND write a one half page application of how the extra credit option relates to the topic of psychology. All papers MUST be typed double space, stapled, and labeled accordingly (i.e. extra credit, outside experience etc.) including the name of your TA at the top, or they will not be graded. Hand in both the option form and your written application to the TA during class time.
Option I - Participation in Research
This will involve signing up and participating in experimental research. Experiments are posted online. Sign up for an experiment on SONA, attend the study, and credit will be sent to your instructor. If you sign up and cannot attend, you have to contact the experimenter 24 hours in advance of the scheduled experiment. A reminder that the written application is due for x-tra credit. See SONA guidelines for more information and the powerpoint presentation found in WebVista under Powerpoints. An email will be sent to you during the first two weeks of class by the Sona Administrator with your password and log in information. Be sure to SAVE it!
Option II - Research Reading
You may read any article that is psychological in nature. The article must come from academic peer reviewed journals. Articles from Psychology Today are NOT acceptable under this category. Use the research reading form. Leave the completed papers in the envelope outside the my office, BohH 347A.
Option III - Review a Video Tape
Any video relating to psychology is acceptable (with the exception of the Discovering Psychology series videos) as long as they relate to the course topic currently being discussed. Select a video tape(s) from the UMD library totaling 35-60 - or a box office video. After viewing the tape, complete the video review form, the written application and turn it in to the T.A. when you are finished.
Option IV - Service Learning for PALS Program (Duluth Public Schools)
The PAL Project is designed to mobilize UMD students to serve in the local schools as mentors/tutors. The Office of Civic Engagement will come to class during the first week to explain this option. To obtain your placement site attend the Spring Community Involvement Fair on February 2nd from 9:00am-2:00pm in the Kirby Ballroom and Register online as a student in this class. For each checkpoint, you will need to submit answers to the reflection questions on the PALS blog in Moodle. After completing ALL of the PALS program requirements and your 20 hours (see schedule/timeline), write a 1-2 page reflection and application to Psychology from your experience and recive ALL four required options PLUS ALL 20 points of extra credit. The Office of Civic Engagement is in Bohannon Hall 209. If you need transportation you can call 722-SAVE or GoogleTransit.
Option V - Campus/Community Event
UMD and the Duluth community are filled with opportunities. For this option, attend any number of events put on by the campus or community. Lectures, speakers, forums, related plays and performances. Anything that you can relate to Psychology can fit here. See Multi-cultural Center calender of events for ideas. Ideas for this option will be forwarded via email throughout the term. Write a one page reflection and application to Psychology. Be sure that it is typed!
*It is recommended that you make and keep a copy of all of your extra credit assignments before you turn them in. This will be your insurance in case there is a discrepancy in points at the end of the semester.
