"Every person has sexual feelings, attitudes and beliefs, but everyone's experience of sexuality is unique because it is processed through an intensely personal experience and public, social sources. It is impossible to understand human sexuality without recognizing its multidimensional nature." Robert Masters, Virginia Johnson and Ralph Kolodny - On sex and human loving
While the online version of this course, Psy 3215 – Topics in Human Sexuality is similar to the classroom version in terms of content, this web-based course affords further opportunity for personal reflection. As indicated in the opening quote, sexuality is very personal. And our personal sexualities do not exist in a vacuum. They are not only products of our biology and personal psychology, they are reflections of the interaction with our historical and cultural contexts. In this sense, sexuality is about more than psychology. It is biology, sociology, anthropology, geography, history, culture, education...sexuality is a multidisciplinary content area.
This course contains 12 web-based units with one to three writing assignments per unit and 4 quizes. Students should anticipate writing 6 pages of application and synthesis work per week. Although this course is an individualized instruction course and self-paced to the extent that there are no class meetings, there are deadlines for course assignments and exam times. If you have problems with time management in general or believe you need the traditional structure of a class that meets on a weekly basis, an online course may not be your best choice.
For undergraduate courses, one credit is defined as equivalent to an average of three hours of learning effort per week (over a full semester) necessary for an average student to achieve an average grade in the course. For example, a student taking a three credit course that meets for three hours a week should expect to spend an additional six hours a week on coursework outside the classroom. That means that you can expect to spend 9 hours per week with this course.
IF you are interested in the field of sexology – IF you enjoy trying on unique perspectives of controversial topics – THEN this class could be for you!
