Resume Writing Tips

  1. The purposes of your resume are:
    • To stimulate interest in you.
    • To show that you have the particular qualifications that will be an asset to the employer you have selected.
    • To demonstrate that you have the unique experience that the employer needs to promote their interests.
    • To obtain an interview.
  2. When you prepare your resume:
    • Be certain that your resume is precise, specific, and absolutely free of grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.
    • Have a friend review and critique your resume.
    • Write a special resume for each type of position emphasizing those elements in your background that you think will be the most pertinent to the various job types you seek. Do not use a resume that is incompatible with the position that you are seeking.
    • Limit yourself to one page, perfectly typed.

Cover Letter Tips

  1. The purpose of the Cover Letter is to convince employers that they want to interview you!
  2. The Cover Letter should:
    • Emphasize why you have what the employers needs in their organization.
    • Ask for opportunities to discuss how you can serve the prospective employer and what you will add to their expertise.
    • Exhibit your knowledge of the organization.
    • Concentrate on reasons why the employer needs you.
    • Limit your letter to one page, perfectly typed.
