Objectives: Develop the skills used in jazz piano such as chord voicing, jazz theory, jazz improvisation and jazz style as well as performance practicum.

 

Materials:
  • music and scale study sheet music as required by the instructor
  • lesson notebook
  • recordings as required by the instructor
  • dedicated notebook of music manuscript paper

 

Requirements:
  • weekly assignments completed in a timely fashion
  • scale/arpeggio studies as determined by the instructor
  • full preparation and memorization of no fewer than 5 jazz standards as determined by the instructor and student
  • completely notated transcription written out and prepared for performance
  • written analysis of one jazz piano performance(live or recorded)
  • no fewer than 2 performances per semester during master class and recital hour
  • end of semester juried performance
  • attendance at masterclass Thursday 1:00-1:50

 

Grading:

Weekly Lesson Grades (graded on a 100 point scale)

40%
  Projects (Transcription, Analysis, etc.) 40%
  Jury Grade 20%
     

 

Grading Scale: A 90 - 100
  B 80 - 89
  C 70 - 79
  D 60 - 69
  F Below 60

 

 

 

 

Attendance: Make-up lessons will not be scheduled for unexcused absences. In order for an absence to be excused, the student must contact the instructor prior to their scheduled lesson time. An unexcused absence will be graded as an F. Only two excused absences (lessons or masterclasses) may be made up during a single semester. If an excused absence is not rescheduled within one week or if the scheduled make-up lesson is missed, the result will be a lesson grade of F.
