COURSE VOLUNTEERS

We thank this wonderful group of people who have volunteered their time to the Northern Stream Ecosystems & the Angler course at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Their help has added new dimensions to the class.


FALL 2005

LLOYD HAUTAJARVI - Mr. Hautajarvi is a long time member of the Arrowhead Fly Fishers and a master fishing net builder. Lloyd helps students with their casting and fly tying skills, will be a guest casting instructor, and will help with the Brule River Outings.

RUEBEN SWENSON - Mr. Swenson is semi-retired, living in northern Arkansas during the winter and fishing northern Minnesota lakes and streams during the summer. Rueben is an active member of the Arrowhead Fly Fishers and known locally as the "Frugal Flyfisher". He is a FFF Certified Basic Casting Instructor and helps students with their casting skills during the course.

DAN BRENEMAN - Mr. Breneman is a research scientist in the Center for Water and the Environment at the Natural Resources Research Institute (UMD, Duluth, MN). He is also the Director of the new Lester River Restoration Project. Dan will help students identify stream insects when he gives two guest lectures to the class on stream insects during October.

JEFF GUNDERSON - Mr. Gunderson is the interim Director of the Minnesota Sea Grant Program. He is a fisheries and exotic species extension specialist. Jeff will give a guest lecture on coaster brook trout restoration to the class in early November.

JIM POLLOCK - Jim Pollock recently retired from Minnesota Power and is a long time member of the Arrowhead Fly Fishers in northern Minnesota. Jim is widely known for his fly angling skills in streams along the north shore of Lake Superior and his successful fly patterns that fool steelhead, salmon, and Kamloops trout in these streams and river mouths. Jim helps students learn casting and fly tying skills, will be a guest instructor for one class, and often attends the Brule River Outings with the class.

MOLLY NEGUS - Ms. Negus is a research scientist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources at the French River in northern Minnesota. Molly and her husband Don will teach students about fisheries management research and fish stock restoration efforts.

DON SCHREINER - Mr. Schreiner is a fisheries expert for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in northern Minnesota who is is charge of fisheries research from Lake Superior to the first physical barriers in streams along Lake Superior's north shore. Don is always eager to talk with class groups and local organizations. We thank him for his presentation on fisheries management to the class.

MARNIE LONSDALE - Ms. Lonsdale works for the City of Duluth. She coordinates and helps solve stream and stormwater issues faced by the city. Marnie will present a guest lecture on stormwater and stream conservation efforts in the City of Duluth. .


FALL 2004

BOB BANKS - Bob gave a wonderful presentation on the history of families and their role in the preservation of the upper Bois Brule River in the northern Wisconsin during our canoe outing. His talk was spiked with interesting anecdotes about prominent figures and the history of the upper river during the past 100 years. We thank Bob and his entire family for opening their wonderful retreat, "WILDCAT", on the upper Bois Brule River (WI) to the Northern Stream Ecosystems & the Angler class.

DR. RICHARD AXLER - Dr. Richard Axler is a Senior Research Associate at the UMD Natural Resources Research Institute. He talked to the class about the stream monitoring and the duluth streams monitoring program.

DR. JEFFREY SCHULDT - Dr. Schuldt is a UW-Extension Fisheries Specialist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, and Earth Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Dr. Schuldt talked to the class about the restoration of coaster brook trout in Lake Superior and highlighted some of his own research on this topic.

He is known for his work on various projects including the effects of development on Miller Creek, a designated trout stream in Duluth, MN. We thank David for giving a wonderful guest lecture on stream conservation and restoration.

JAN ZITA GROVER - Jan will return this year to speak to the class about citizen river monitoring. She is a nationally recognized author. Her book, Northern Waters, was selected again this year as the textbook for the course.

CINDI and DR. RAY RAAB - We thank Cindi, Ray, and their entire family for opening their wonderful retreat, "WILDCAT", on the upper Bois Brule River (WI) to the Northern Stream Ecosystems & the Angler class. Ray gave an excellent talk about the history of the Bois Brule River and its inhabitants. Cindi is a nurse in Duluth and Ray is an economics professor at UMD.

SETH MOORE - Seth Moore is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Minnesota who works for the Natural Resources Research Institute. Seth talked to the class about his research on coaster brook trout.

DR. JOHN CONNOLLY - Dr. Connolly is a dentist from Cloquet, MN and the Secretary/Treasurer of the Arrowhead Fly Fishers. John helped out on our Bois Brule River canoe outing.

CINDI and DR. RAY RAAB - We thank Cindi, Ray, and their entire family for opening their wonderful retreat, "WILDCAT", on the upper Bois Brule River (WI) to the Northern Stream Ecosystems & the Angler class. Cindi is a nurse in Duluth and Ray is an economics professor at UMD. After canoeing the upper Bois Brule River, we enjoyed an afternoon of stories (see Bob Banks below), relaxing, and eating in this idyllic setting. Cindi sure flips great hamburgers!

DR. THOMAS WATERS - Dr. Tom Waters is writer, publisher, conservationist, and emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Waters is widely published in the scientific literature and known for his pioneering work on insect drift in streams. Tom's new book, Wildstream - A Natural History of the Free Flowing River, was selected as a course textbook. [Unfortunately, Tom had to cancel his presentation on the natural history of streams to the class.]

DR. CARL RICHARDS - Dr. Richards in the Director of the Minnesota Sea Grant Program and a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Among other things, he is known for his scientific research on stream fishes and macroinvertebrates. We thank Carl for giving a guest lecture on stream fish communities to the class.

PHIL JOHNSON - Mr. Johnson is a teacher in the Proctor School System. Phil is an active member of the Arrowhead Fly Fishers and regularly writes a column, "From the Banks of the Midway River", for their newsletter. Phil helped students learn to tie Woolly Bugger and Pheasant Tail Nymph flies during the course.
