The Main Square in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev is usually referred to as Independence Square or "Maidan Nezalezhnosti" in Ukrainian. This is the center of the city as well as the place where all major events happen including fireworks for major holidays and the demonstrations in favor of different causes. This is the site of such events as the 2004 Orange Revolution as well as the annual New Year's celebration.
Originally this square was named
"The October Revolution Square" in honor of the Communist Revolution of the early 20th century but was renamed after Ukraine gained Independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991.

The Independence Square is the center of all the activity in the city. There is a subway station, mall, post office, conservatory among many other important places. Some of these prominent buildings that are situated in and around the Main Square include:

Here the most famous Ukrainian musicians study and perform.

 

 

 



This clock not only shows everyone in the downtown area current time as well as the weather but is also very loud, so you don't have to see it to tell what time it is. It rings a bell every hour as many times as it is the time.

 

 

 


Here you can send your parcel anywhere in the world. All major postal service companies could be accessed here including a worldwide leader DHL.

There are many fashion stores in the undergroud of the Main Square. You can find and buy almost anything there.
