Student Teaching Application Essay

Hello! My name is Molly Sorvik and I am very excited about becoming a teacher. I have known since I was in seventh grade that I wanted to be a teacher. I have had wonderful teachers at every level of my schooling and think they inspired me to influence others as they influenced me. At the same time, I think it is because I had a few poor teachers along the way that I know I should be teaching. I can make a difference in the lives of my students. So now after completing all coursework for my degree except student teaching, I still feel that I should be teaching.

As for my character, I have an outspoken personality, yet am easily approachable. I have always been easy to talk with and am looking forward to meeting new people in the community I will work in. My professors, bosses, fellow employees and friends here at school have attested to my ability to adapt to any situation. I am a fun person to be around and can fill a room with laughter. At the same time, I know when to adapt to a more serious tone when necessary. I know I will need to take this ability with my in my classroom.

My interests include reading, playing the trumpet, singing, spending time with family and friends and enjoying the outdoors. I have been in musical ensembles every semester at UMD and am so active in the music department that most people think I am a music major. This love of music has sent me on various trips across the country with the UMD Athletic Band, of which I was elected Pep Band President last year. I love music, but reading is such a strong passion of mine that I hope to spread that passion to everyone I meet. I enjoy spending time with my family but unfortunately we don’t manage to get together very often anymore. I grew up with three siblings in a small community in Central Minnesota and higher education has managed to spread us from Fort Lauderdale, FL, to Duluth, MN, with Brainerd and the Twin Cities in between. This separation from my siblings may be why I have such close friends here in Duluth.

Like I said earlier, I have known for almost a decade that I would be a teacher. My goals as an educator include inspiring my students to take charge of their education, college-bound or not. By giving my students life long skills in English, they will be better citizens in their communities. I may not inspire every student to love literature as much as I do, but all I ask is to inspire them in something they feel passionate about. Literature is so broad that there are materials for every interest. Helping my students find a relevant interest in their lives is something I strive to achieve as a teacher.

I am very excited and also nervous about teaching. I know that the nerves are pure excitement, because I have been preparing to teach now for three solid years. I look forward to working with students and becoming active in the community I will be entering. Teaching had been a life-long goal of mine and I cannot wait to jump right in.
