Experimental work on the effect heterogeneities have on the shape of the miscible mixing zone during contaminant transport.

Experiments are conducted in lucite columns packed with spherical glass beads. Heterogeneities are created using layers of beads that vary in diameter. These two layer porous media are one of the simplest heterogeneous media.

Preliminary results suggest that even for a very simple change in the pore space, that mixing becomes non-gaussian before encountering the transition, and that it taked many hundreds of local length scales before asymptotic mixing is again reached.
