: A thought occured to me today as I pondered the idea of the Renaissance's legacy. Perhaps this has already come up and I just didn't know, but isn't the idea of Liberal Education programs a Renaissance idea? To have each of us students striving to gain knowledge in all fields of study. The ideal of creating the perfect, well-rounded, knowledable human beings. The ideal that we will learn to write in complete sentences and not fragments : ) Anyway, I think it is a cool idea. I don't know if all of us could sit at Castiglione's court but since we have all taken lib eds, aren't we a 90's version of Renaissance people?
: I will share a story with everyone about one of my favorite teachers. She once told our class that she really hoped that we we didn't look at education simply as a means of getting a degree. She hoped that we looked at it instead as a way of becoming a more interesting human being. She gave an analogy. She said, think of yourself as a crystal. Think of the things you study as creating another dimension when someone looks into you. Wouldn't you rather be a beautiful, colorful multi-dimensional prism than just a plain old rock? This strikes me as a very Renaissance kind of idea and it has stuck with me for years.
