OK...to be perfectly honest I feel completly lost right now. I am going to give this posting a try and please don't be to harsh on the replys.

The French Lieutenant's Woman was a interesting movie...I would have never thought about or understood many of the symbolic refrences to Darwin and marx if I was not in this class.

Darwin's theory: A man chooses a mate by instinct rather than how that mate will increase the advancement of the human species.

This theory is present in this movie when Charles chooses to be with Sarah rather than the daughter of the wealthy man. Charles knowing very well that his life with Sarah would be nothing like that of the one he would live with the rich daughter. Darwin's theory also states that Sarah and Charles offspring will be benificial to the human race jsut as much as the offspring of Charles and and the rich daughter. Right?

Marx's theroy: The upper class will continue to rise while the lower class will continue to fall.

Charles choice to marry out of his social class with Sarah proves there is a middle class that is being forgotten. Sure there will always be someone higher than you or even lower than you on the social scale but in most worlds we are all just floating around in the middle somewhere. If the lower class begins to rise up to the upper class they will run into the middle class first. Well this theory is clearly stated in the movie that Charles finally does find Sarah and marry her he is going out of this theory of Marx.
