In relating to Marvin Harris' book, "Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches," I would like to talk about my own riddles of culture here in the United States. As we all know in the Hindu religion the cow is very sacred. Even though they are starving in India they resist eating their sacred cow. But the question I would like to ask is: What in the United States is sacred to us? Or better yet, what do other countries of the world think is sacred to us? It is pretty obvious from listening to the news, that we have many problems in the United States. Take our president for example, what kind of image does he convey about are country? As United States citizens we should care that our own elected leader can't even keep it in the pants. Other people must think that the majority of the population has this problem, but yes many people do have this problem, so what the hell let good old Bill off. Now I'm not trying to disregard his accomplishments in office, but what people want to hear is what kind of scandal is going on. What does that say about our society? Our news media prays on people in order to keep us happy. Face it people, Americans are obsessed with the bad not the good. In order to feel well we must possess some negative aspect of someone's life. How about sinnig within religion? It happens everyday, granted it happens everyday all around the world. But what do we have to sin for? As Americans we have everyting, and still we are not satisfied. The quest for more continues to be a central theme for us, yet we get more and everyone who actually needs it doesn't get it. So what is sacred to us? Our house, jobs, parents, children, or religion. We need to sit back and evaluate our lives from the stand point of a person who has nothing. And after doing that we will maybee see what is sacred to us within our society.
