I too agree that the sixties are often referred to in much conversation about change, but I think I know whay too. In my opinion, which I encourage you to take or leave as you see fit, the reason the sixties are often refered to when talking about times of great change in this country and others is because the sixties are something that many people can relate to. Sure Whitney inventing the cotton gin is important, but who was alive to be able to relate to it. You can also look at times like Lincoln's presidency when refering to change, or a whole plethera of other things, but very few people are even alive today who can really relate to it, most of us didn't live through it.
Then, look at the sixties. After World War II, the people of this country were really cranking out babies, and most of these people would be around for the changes of the sixties, which everyone must admit were many. People relate to it and get nostalgic about it, just look at Tom some day when we're listening to music. That's nostalgia if ever I've seen it. The doctrines of this country were in many ways re-written, and the people were free, but not only in the literal sense. Free ideas, free love, whatever, the key word was free. I also want to make it clear that I too wonder why some of the other times of profound change are put beneath the sixties, and almost seem forgotten sometimes, but I really do think that the sheer number of people that were around for the sixties can't help but feel that they were important, and most of us aren't too far removed to get the feeling that they were indeed important from talking to or\ur parents or taking this class. Many of you must agree, because many of the discussions, good or bad, involve talking to someone who was there, wether it be Vietnam or a peace march, Kent University or the moon landing, my uncle the hippie's bell botoms and platforms to my uncles the hippies residual alcohol and drug problems, these are interesting and as important, as valid, as many other things that have happened or will happen in this country.
