: I do tend to agree that there is lack of a binding religion in the U.S, and I also agree that this is not necessarily bad. Conflict of religion causes problems, and embracing all religions or just plain ignoring different ideas often makes people content. The old ignorance is bliss ideal. As to what we as americans consider sacred, I think that that is dependant on who you're talking to. I find some things sacred, other things not-so, but to me this country is sacred, the ability to do what I want and have a voice is sacred, sure even McDonald's is sacred (I guess I hadn't really thought abgout that before). Sure this may shy away from traditional religious meaning, but the U.S. is not a traditional country in some respects. Maybe the american religion is finding as many names as possible for body parts and money, or watching the news to see who the president screwed today, but that's up to the people who watch. Again, ignorance is bliss. Humans are human and I leave it at that. I guess the philosophy I take has been taken from an old song

"you've got to accentuate the positive... eliminate the negative, grasp on to the affirmative, and don't mess with Mr. in-between."

right or wrong, it works for me.
