On this last Seinfeld eve, we thought we'd pose a couple of questions and thoughts about our current society compared to what it was. This dovetails nicely with the Big Chill, and some of the conversations we've had about that.
If you think about it, the highest rated show of modern times (sitcom at least) is Seinfeld, which is admittedly a show about nothing. It talks about day to day situations and draws from experiences that we have possibly had (if you are a middle aged New Yorker man with very strange friends). This is a stark contrast to the ideals of the sixties, which were about everything. They cared about the greater issues of life, and when talking about individual freedom, that was on a grand scale also.
So when did we change from everything to nothing? The rise of corporate greed? or was is society as a whole? Are you still reading this?
Tonight's plot, as you probably know right now, concerned the dynamic foursome traveling, and while in a smaller Mass. town, they witness a carjacking and do you guessed it "Nothing", just like the show is about. Well, Kramer even videotapes it, and they are all laughing when a larger man is stripped of his car right in front of them. They are brought up on Good Samaratin charges, an idea which a Johnny Cochrane clone says is preposterous. "This nation was built on the right to do nothing." he said, in defense of their inaction. That is very appropriate for modern times, when many would rather run over you than help you up. The cold and callous '80s are fading slow, with the power suits, coke and corporate raiders that wrecked the cool vibe that eminated from the '60s and '70s. They are still around somewhat, but we are becoming more caring, it takes time though.
We have to try to change things, because as much as we enjoy Seinfeld, we don't want our lives and world to be about nothing. Let's try to rekindle the 60's vibe and help others. Because, it's a cliche, but what goes around comes around.
Make the world about something!
Take care and best wishes on your summers and futures
