I happened to like Harris' book but not because I consider Harris some kind oof genius or anything. I like this book simply because it is one of ideas and alternatives to some of or mainstream "canned" information. However, I have a problem with the fact that Harris just like so many others that dabble in this genre just can't resist "God Bashing". It seems like one cannot have an intelligent conversation these days without someone like Harris deciding it is time to try and make anyone with conventional Christian beliefs feel like an idiot. It seems in Harris chapter "The Prince of Peace" that he might have had his thumb up his ass or something equally as impairing because he couldn't even produce a good bullshit argument. For example I don't remember seeing any reference to the fact that the gospel ( as was the entire Bible) written by many different people at very different times. That right there would account for many of the contradictions that these theorists seem to want to cling to as concrete proof that the Bible is a farce. Just imagine trying to get five of your friends to tell the same story about what you all did Saturday night, I guarantee that there'll be a few difference in accounts and opinions. Also, it is obvious that part of Jesus' arrest and conviction was because of the authorities getting nervous about Jesus' preachings but in that day a religious movement didn't necessarily have to be entirely separate from a political movement. In fact, now that I think about it, that is still going on in The Mid East today. People are fighting a political movemant in the name of God. I don't why Harris sees this kind of thing as discrediting Jesus. Now don't get me wrong I actually agreed with Harris in the fact that the wacked out counter culture isn't going to get a damn thing accomplished the way that they're going about it. I know, for instance that I can do great work when I have partaken of the herb; however, I rarely get started doing that "Great work." Especially when there are much more serious things to worry about like munchies and cotton mouth. But what I am trying to say is that Harris is not a complete idiot he just has fallen prey to the temptation to make Jesus the center of our common misconceptions. There are those of us who believe and I can only speak for myself but I am getting damn tired of beating that same dead horse!!!! I think it is pointless to waste my time arguing with somebody about the same tired subject when it is obvious that the end result will yield nothing. I am always going to believe and that is my prerogative. That is also what we call faithand no earthly opinion is going to sway my divine faith. SO - can't we find something new and refreshing to debate? How about politics, pollution, pregnancy or whatever else comes to mind. We are smart individuals, why do we feel so compelled to limit ourselves?
